Week three began by an introduction to Fundamentals of Art and our goals for the year. We had a traditional start with an observational drawing of our non-dominant hand.
On Tuesday and Wednesday we completed a series of line studies through observational drawings of sea shells. Our focus was on contour line drawing to define outer edges and dominant planes and on how line can be used to create value, detail and texture. Although these are concepts we will explore in greater detail later in the semester, students were able to grasp the at a fundamental level enough to complete the project.
On Thursday we began our first formally graded assignment: a study of line and composition through observational drawing (s) of sea shells. Students were invited to explore themes such as abstraction, a sketchbook study, a formal drawing, incorporation of text and the use of ink and color media. Students were also challenged to utilize time management by being asked to choose a drawing that was both ambitious enough to demand three days of working but also manageable to complete in the time period. I am very pleased with student's ability to manage their time and appropriately challenge themselves!

Makeup work for assignment #1
If a student missed assignment #1 for any reason, she or he may make up that work by watching the video, "Elements of Art: LINE" and creating a self-portrait with line as the primary element of art. Because we are working on the concept of observational drawing, students should use a mirror and draw what they see while creating their self-portrait. The self-portrait should be turned in with a brief statement about the artist's use of line in their self-portrait drawing. Students with excused absences during week 3 will be given full credit. Students without excused absences will have their final grade reduced by one letter grade.
