Black history month
As we finish our self-portrait series, we find ourselves in February, which we celebrate as Black History Month. We wish to honor African American history and our students as contemporary activists, scholars, and artists by creating a portrait that honors both history and our students as history in the making! RFL artists will research African American historical figures and select someone who they admire. They will then create a transfer print portrait inspired by artist Emory Douglas.

Artist exemplar
The artist we will be learning about as we create our work is Emory Douglas. Douglas worked as the Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party and his graphic art was featured in the party's news paper. As the art director, designer, and main illustrator for The Black Panter newspaper, Douglas created images that became icons, representing black American struggles during the 1960s and 1970s.
