HISTORICAL PORTRAITS
In late February to Mid-March, we completed our Historical Portraits. We learned the acrylic gel transfer method and printed a black and white image of the subject of our portrait. This portrait is the capstone piece of the portraiture series at RFL.
As grades close for 3rd quarter, students are strongly encouraged to check Parent Portal or grades posted in our classroom for any missing work. Remember that any grades 50% below are either missing or eligible for make-up during coach class.

Planning for your Historical Portraits
The week of 2/22 we are planning and preparing for our Historical Portraits.
- Students selected and researched an African American figure who they admire as the subject for their portraits.
- Students prepared their canvases by taping, painting and sanding two coats of gesso.
- Students planned and designed a background using just two colors, which symbolizes the cultural values and philosophical ideals or their chosen subject.
- Working like a printmaker (ala Emory Douglas!) students planned which color of their background design and learned how to achieve opacity with acrylic paint by completing one background color at a time.
Black Panther's Ten-Point PRogram
For "Writing Wednesday" we read the Black Panther's Ten-Point Program and selected one point to re-write for a contemporary issue. If you missed class on Wednesday, 2/17 you will need to read the Ten-Point Program on your own and complete the worksheet below.

Week of 2/8 - Micrography
Students were given two days this week to complete their Micrography portraits for grading. As you should recall, your in-progress Micrography was graded for the final 2nd quarter grade. This was your pencil micrography. This week students will go over their drawing using ink and will write an artist statement about their work. The finished Micrography WITH artist statement is due on 2/10 for display in the school community. See below for the final project check-list and artist statement graphic organizer.

Week of 2/1 - Writing about art
This week we wrote an artist statement about our mixed media self-portraits. On Friday 2/5 each student was given a writing worksheet tailored to their individual learning needs. If you missed Friday, you missed important instructional time. You were also not here to turn-in your work. If you missed instructional time this week, you will need to attend coach class or do independent research with the help of a peer or the internet. Below is one of the worksheets provided to help students with their writing.
